El tenor Plácido Domingo quiere impedir que el asentamiento milenario de Allianoi, en Turquía, quede destruido por las aguas de una presa. El cantante ha dirigido una carta personalmente al primer ministro turco, Recep Tayyip Erdogán, pidiéndole que ponga fin a esta construcción y salve la ciudad. Allianoi, construida en el siglo II d.C., que está considerada por los arqueólogos como el «spa» (o recinto termal) más antiguo del mundo.

«Somos muchos los que creemos que preservar el antiguo asentamiento de Allianoi traería beneficios duraderos a la población de Turquía», dice el tenor, que actualmente preside la ONG Europa Nostra, dedicada a la preservación del patrimonio cultural europeo. «Salvar este antiguo tesoro nos enriquecería a todos durante las generaciones venideras», asegura.

Allianoi está situado en la provincia turca de Izmir (Esmirna), junto a la antigua ciudad de Pérgamo. Pero mientras la supervivencia de este asentamiento arqueológico está bien asegurada, al igual que el de Éfeso, también en la región, Allianoi entra justo en el borde del trazado de la futura presa de Yortanli, cuya construcción terminó en 2010. Ahora mismo, el yacimiento arqueológico está completamente tapado por la arena, tal y como estaba previsto en el plan de obras.

Allianoi – Threatened future for Ancient Roman Spa

The preparatory work, begun on 10 April 2010, is complete, fulfilling the technical requirements for the planned flooding of Allianoi, an outstanding Roman Bath complex and town situated near Bergama in western Turkey. The inundation of Allianoi, as a part of the Yortanli irrigation dam scheme, will result in the loss of the entire site, of the ancient spa town, including an impressive preserved thermal spa, dating from the 2nd century AD. Since 2005 Europa Nostra has repeatedly expressed deep concern at the alarming and immediate threat facing this important archaeological site, to the highest levels of the Turkish Government and to the Press.
