Fallingwater o casa Kaufmann: Un instante de genialidad – loff.it (Sobre la genial «Casa de la Cascada» de Frank Lloyd Wright)

Edgar Kaufmann no dio su brazo a torcer y aquel mismo día avisó al arquitecto de que se presentaría de inmediato en su estudio para ver el desarrollo de su nueva vivienda de vacaciones. Lo que no sabía, es que Frank Lloyd Wright había estado demasiado ocupado con el diseño del nuevo modelo de ciudad Broadacre City, y apenas había dedicado tiempo a su proyecto.

Durante las dos horas que duró el trayecto de Mr. Kaufmann, Wright se puso manos a la obra y esbozó los dibujos de la que posteriormente se consagraría como “la mejor obra de la arquitectura estadounidense de la historia” según el American Institute of Architects (AIA).

“Quiero que viváis con la cascada, no sólo que la miréis sino que se convierta en parte integral de vuestras vidas“, le comentó al cliente que inmediatamente quedó hipnotizado.

Situada en el paraje Mill Run, en Pensilvania, la casa de la cascada (Fallingwater o casa Kaufmann) se construiría en 1937 siguiendo los principios de la arquitectura orgánica preconizada por Wright, arquitectura que da vital importancia a la adaptación e integración de la arquitectura en el entorno donde se ubica.

De este modo el discurrir del agua sobre las rocas, es materializado a partir de distintas plataformas en voladizo que se deslizan sobre el cuerpo central de la vivienda construido con la piedra autóctona del lugar. Lo esencial del entorno queda reflejado en la construcción: lo fluido frente a lo sólido, lo perdurable frente a lo efímero, las ligeras plataformas flotando sobre el núcleo estático en piedra.

Like most of the tens of millions of tourists in Yellowstone over the years, the McDonalds of Cascade placed Old Faithful geyser near the top of their list of attractions and, afterward, their memories. But for young Jim, there was also the Crow’s Nest.

A series of catwalks and stairs led to a perch in the rafters of Old Faithful Inn, where a four-piece orchestra played. The story goes that Robert Reamer, the inn’s architect more than a half-century earlier, had built it to fulfill a childhood fantasy for a tree house.

«Before the earthquake in ’59 you could go to the top of it,» McDonald said last week. «That’s one of the things I remember is climbing up those stairs.»

Look where he’s climbed to now.

McDonald was the principal historic architect for a $26 million restoration of Old Faithful Inn, a project that entailed five winters of work from 2004-2009.

«It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime projects, working with a major architect, Robert Reamer, and working with his building and trying to bring back some of the things that he put into these structures that really made part of what Yellowstone’s all about,» McDonald said. «Besides the geysers and things, you have these great rustic buildings, like Old Faithful Inn.»

Medalla de Oro AIA 2012 para Steven Holl


La American Institute of Architects (AIA) le otorgó su máxima distinción al arquitecto estadounidense, responsable de obras como el Simmons Hall en Estados Unidos y el edificio Linked Hybrid en China. Es la edición número 68 del premio.

El arquitecto Steven Holl fue premiado por la American Institute of Architects (AIA) con la Medalla de Oro 2012, la máxima distinción que otorga anualmente. Al explicar las razones de su decisión, la AIA resaltó la filosofía proyectual del estadounidense, que en sus obras busca unir el enfoque humano con la libertad formal.

Holl, por su parte, afirmó que el galardón es un efectivo espaldarazo a su forma de entender la arquitectura, una práctica que contempla tanto la exploración teórica como el trabajo experimental.

Holl fundó Steven Holl Architects en 1976 y lo lidera actualmente junto a Chris McVoy. Docente de Columbia University desde 1981, algunas de sus obras más emblemáticas son el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Kiasma (Finlandia, 1998), el Simmons Hall de MIT (Estados Unidos, 2003) y el complejo multiuso Linked Hybrid (China, 2009).

Su estudio actualmente tiene oficinas en Nueva York y en Beijing y ha trabajado primordialmente en proyectos relacionados con las artes (museos, galerías y sitios de exhibición), como así también en programas educativos y residenciales. Holl es el recipiente número 68 del premio, que ha distinguido a luminarias como Frank Lloyd Wright (1949), Le Corbusier (1961) y Louis Kahn (1971).

Research reveals sustainable projects are on the rise; cost is potential prohibitive factor.

BALTIMORE, PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — The majority of architects and interior designers, 87% and 86% respectively, acknowledge that they are concerned with how products are manufactured with regard to sustainability, according to new research released today by IMRE. The research showed that the number of sustainable projects performed by architects and interior designers is projected to rise in the next year, and that sustainable products are often associated with higher cost.

These are some of the results released from the survey in which 812 architects and designers responded to an online survey fielded between September 19 and 23, 2011. The survey was spearheaded by IMRE, a full-service marketing agency specializing in the Home & Building industry, in conjunction with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).

Doubts are cast on manufacturer claims about sustainable products.

The way architects and interior designers view manufacturers’ claims that their products are sustainable reveals that brands need to re-focus their marketing efforts to make their claims more convincing.

While most architects and interior designers pay careful attention to manufacturers’ sustainability claims, both are similarly skeptical when asked if they are confident that products referred to as «sustainable» actually are.

40% of architects and 34% of interior designers are «uncertain» if products claiming to be sustainable are actually sustainable.
