The Board of Directors of la Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta, met today in the headquarters of Ca’ Giustinian and, after thanking and expressing its gratitude to David Chipperfield for the excellent results of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition, appointed Rem Koolhaas Director of the Architecture section, with the specific responsibility of curating the 14th International Architecture Exhibition to be held in 2014.
At the end of the meeting of the Board, President Paolo Baratta stated:
“The Architecture Exhibitions of the Biennale have gradually grown in importance internationally. Rem Koolhaas, one of the most significant personalities among the architects of our time – who has based all his work on intense research, now renowned celebrity – has accepted to engage himself in yet another research and, why not, rethinking”.
On his part, Rem Koolhaas has stated: “We want to take a fresh look at the fundamental elements of architecture – used by any architect, anywhere, anytime – to see if we can discover something new about architecture.” …>»

El arquitecto holandés Rem Koolhaas será el director de la Bienal de Arquitectura 2014 en Venecia, según ha informado la organización en su página web.
El presidente la Bienal, Paolo Baratta, dijo de Koolhaas que es «una de las personalidades más importantes de entre los arquitectos contemporáneos«.
Koolhaas tan sólo dijo sobre sus planes para esta importante exposición de arquitectura: «Queremos echar una nueva mirada a los elementos fundamentales de la arquitectura que cualquier arquitecto utiliza siempre en todas partes«.

Otro mes, otro Ranking Arquitectura mensual de Blogs en Español generado por la organización Ebuzzing (antes “Wikio“), a través de algoritmo propio en su “Labs”.
Ya voy hacia mi tercer año ininterrumpido con esta costumbre, y aunque actualizó la primera semana de Noviembre, recién ahora puedo sentarme a recopilarlo – en borrador, cuando escribo esto.

El arquitecto español, Juan Navarro Baldeweg, ganador de la VIII BIAU, cree que el momento actual exige «reorientar valores» – Yahoo! Eurosport ES

Cádiz, (EFE).- El arquitecto español Juan Navarro Baldeweg, que hoy ha recibido el Premio Trayectoria de la VIII Bienal Iberoamericana de Arquitectura y Urbanismo (BIAU), cree que el momento actual exige «reorientar valores» porque «el menos es más tendrá que generalizarse«.
Estas han sido algunas de las reflexiones sobre la arquitectura que Navarro Baldeweg, nacido en Santander en 1939 y autor de edificios como los Teatros del Canal en Madrid, ha hecho tras recibir «con emoción» este premio en el acto de clausura de la VIII BIAU, que durante esta semana se ha desarrollado en Cádiz.
La VIII BIAU también ha entregado hoy el Premio Trayectoria al arquitecto argentino César Naselli, un galardón que este investigador y docente que ha impulsado «el amor» por la arquitectura a varias generaciones, no ha recogido en persona, ya que, debido a su avanzada edad, cerca de 80 años, no ha podido viajar a Cádiz.

- El jurado de la VIII Bienal Iberoamericana de Arquitectura y Urbanismo ha concedido el Premio a la Trayectoria Profesional al arquitecto español Juan Navarro Baldeweg y al arquitecto argentino César Naselli, por su aporte a la arquitectura iberoamericana, tanto en obra construida como en el ámbito académico y de la investigación.

With the 2012 London Festival of Architecture reaching a crescendo this weekend, we thought it time to bring you the highlights of what has been a fortnight of thought-provoking architectural celebrations. Under the theme of the ‘Playful City‘ – referencing the impending Olympics, but also appealing to the child within use – this year’s events spanned a variety of ‘hubs’ across the British capital.
The first weekend honed in on Southwark, where community events like the Gibbon’s Rent Garden, the Union Street Printing Press and the Reunion Public House ensured a lively couple of days. Our highlights also included the Architecture Foundation’s gorgeous ‘Bureau Spectacular: Three Little Words’, featuring an installation inspired by practice founder Jimenez Lai’s architectural comic strips (on display until the end of August).
Moving on to the City of London hub, we marveled at the future face of the capital, as envisaged by the Developing City exhibition (on until 9 September). Meanwhile, architects competed to create the cleverest and best-looking structures out of cans at the Canstruction event in Canary Wharf. Squire and Partners were deservedly crowned the winners with their gazebo-style structure, incorporating 2,580 cans that were carefully secured in hand-cut wooden inserts.
The London Pleasure Gardens hub had to battle some bad weather, but launched triumphantly regardless a few days ago. Here, visitors can stroll among follies, pavilions and pop ups in the East London park, as well as sit down and relax on one of the pews and perches conceived by architects for the RIBA London competition.

This year marks the 5th anniversary since the inception of World Industrial Design Day, which was created in 2007 on the occasion of Icsid’s 50th anniversary.
To celebrate the milestone, the organisation is asking the global design community one simple question – What is industrial design?
As basic as this may seem, the organisation poses this question at a time when in fact nothing is simple anymore. The world is evolving and the industry of industrial design is expanding. What better time than on this international day of observance to reflect on how the profession of industrial design is defined today.
What is industrial design in 10 seconds or less
To facilitate the collection of ideas about ‘What is industrial design?‘ Icsid has launched a social media campaign. All Icsid Members and friends are encouraged to participate in this year’s video challenge by submitting their definition of industrial design in 10 seconds or less. Watch the video below for more information and instructions on how to participate.

Tras el éxito alcanzado en la primera edición, el sábado 2 de junio todas las tiendas Fnac celebrarán simultáneamente el 2º Maratón Fotográfico Nacional Fnac.
La inscripción previa, totalmente gratuita, se realiza en el mostrador de información de las tiendas Fnac desde el 12 de mayo. CIENCIA | El museo estará abierto al público a partir del 1 de junio

El primer acelerador de partículas instalado en España, la linterna que iluminó la Torre de Hércules entre 1857 y 1904 o la cabina del Jumbo que trasladó el ‘Guernica’ a España son algunas de las piezas que se pueden observar en la nueva sede del Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (MUNCYT) de A Coruña que este viernes han inaugurado los Príncipes de Asturias.
Ubicado en el edificio ‘Prisma de Cristal’, un inmueble de singular arquitectura premiado en la IX Bienal Española de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, la nueva sede del MUNCYT en A Coruña complementará a la existente en la antigua estación de Delicias en Madrid, inaugurada en 1997.
La nueva infraestructura, un proyecto con una inversión de 23 millones de euros, mostrará más de 300 piezas de incalculable valor histórico repartidas en seis plantas.

Los Príncipes inauguran en La Coruña el Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología
Los Príncipes de Asturias, don Felipe y doña Letizia, han inaugurado, en La Coruña, la nueva sede del Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (MUNCYT), que abrirá sus puertas al público el próximo 1 de junio, en un edificio de más de 6.000 metros cuadrados.
El centro prevé recibir 200.000 visitas en su primer año.

La sede central del MUNCYT, Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología, está situada en el edificio Prisma de Cristal en La Coruña. Este emblemático edificio, un cubo de vidrio diseñado por los arquitectos Victoria Acebo y Ángel Alonso, fue galardonado entre otros con el Premio Nacional de Arquitectura Joven de la 9ª Bienal de Arquitectura Española.
Desde los exteriores del Prisma se puede observar cómo una caja de cristal cobija lo que en su interior se mostrará como dos edificios en uno. Un árbol cuyas ramas son imponentes bloques de hormigón contiene todos los servicios del museo. Entre esas ramas y el envoltorio de vidrio quedan definidas las salas de exposiciones, de diferentes tamaños y alturas, todas ellas llenas de una luminosidad difusa.

Art, architecture unite in captivating exhibition: «Architecture in the Expanded Field»
If you’ve ever imagined plunging into a Mobius strip, I have just the exhibition for you: «Architecture in the Expanded Field,» at the San Francisco campus of the California College of the Arts.
It’s a mazelike immersion where Richard Serra‘s rusted steel «Sequence» unwinds beneath the fog-shrouded Blur Building of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, an arm’s length away from Andy Goldsworthy‘s «Faultline.» Sixty architects and artists are represented in all, and an equal number of creative provocations.
What’s on display isn’t the physical work itself, but diagrams, studies and images transferred to sequences of frosted acrylic panels. Each rectangular panel is connected by hinges to the panels alongside, above and below it. The interconnected panels – think flattened chains in taut rows – are then hung from the ceiling by thin steel cables.
The various strands all start at the exhibition’s outer four edges and twist and snap toward a central core, leaving just enough space for passageways from each side that visitors can follow. Plunging in, we encounter work by such emerging locals as Iwamoto Scott and Future Cities Lab as well as Big Names such as Serra and Goldsworthy.
This is the latest installment of the «Way Beyond Art» series at the college’s Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts. It was co-curated by Ila Berman, director of the architecture program, and architect Douglas Burnham. Their goal: to convey what the wall text calls «a new and expanding network of relations between the domains of architecture, sculpture, interiors and landscape.»

The CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts presents the exhibition The Way Beyond Art: Architecture in the Expanded Field through April 7, 2012, in the Upper Logan Galleries of California College of the Arts.
Architecture in the Expanded Field is designed and curated by Ila Berman, CCA director of Architecture, and Douglas Burnham, CCA adjunct professor and principal of envelope a+d. It explores the realm of installation art and architecture across a broad terrain of practices, ranging from the immersive environments of Ryoji Ikeda, Tomas Saraceno, and Philippe Rahm to the deconstructions of Gordon Matta-Clark and the spatial distortions and tectonic manipulations of Softlab, Numen / For Use, Gramazio & Kohler, and theverymany. The exhibition has two components: an immersive full-scale installation (both within and outside the gallery) and a didactic «surface» component that presents the mapped expanded field of architectural installation.
