The International Union of Architects (UIA) has awarded the 2026 UIA Gold Medal to Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, recognising an outstanding body of work defined by intelligence, restraint, and a profound sense of responsibility toward society.
The UIA Gold Medal, established in 1984, is the highest distinction awarded by the Union to an architect or group of architects, acknowledging a sustained contribution to architecture over time. It is conferred every three years as part of the UIA Awards and Prizes programme.

Becoming an architect «just happened» says Eduardo Souto de Moura
Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura describes how his career began almost by chance in the first video in a series produced by Dezeen.
Speaking in the short film, the Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate explained that his decision to study architecture came largely from a desire to pursue subjects he enjoyed, such as history, philosophy, drawing and physics.
«To tell the truth, I never thought I would be an architect,» said Souto de Moura in the video interview. «It just happened.»
