Out There: New Architecture Across America

Robert Ivy, Cathleen McGuigan and Peter MacKeith

Foreword by Marlon Blackwell

Out There is a critical survey of 50 architectural firms working across America’s regional cities and small towns. These practitioners operate at every scale and with all building types, weaving a rich architectural tapestry that reflects the breadth and diversity of the American landscape.

Each day, architects across the United States are busy planning and constructing individual homes, public buildings and civic spaces rooted in local culture and context. Yet, to many, the perception prevails that American architecture is driven largely by the traditional centres of power on the East and West coasts. Out There challenges that notion, spotlighting practices throughout the whole of the US that are deeply grounded in place and community. What unites the firms featured in this volume is a commitment to architecture’s civic, social and environmental responsibilities. Many prioritize sustainability, adaptive reuse, housing and social justice. Even in an increasingly homogenized, hyper-connected world, these architects remain locally focused

“I think the main purpose of architecture should be like a stone dropped into the lake, so that the ripples go right up to the edge. The role of an architect is to look at much wider horizons, much wider scopes and get into those things.”

Exhibition Siza and Oscar: Beyond the Sea opens in September – Casa da Arquitectura

It is an abstract visual dialogue between the architecture of Siza Vieira in Brazil and that of Oscar Niemeyer in Portugal around 28 works that pay a photographic tribute to two icons of modernist architecture.

Curated by researcher Ângela Berlinde, the exhibition proposes an abstract visual dialogue between the architecture of Siza Vieira in Brazil through the Iberê Camargo Foundation and that of Oscar Niemeyer in Portugal with the Hotel in Madeira.

«The photographs by Bassul that inspire this conversation of three – beyond the sea – invite us to feel the heartbeat of the work of two major architects of our time, Siza and Niemeyer, treasures that remain to mark the flow and temperamental geometries of this transatlantic movement,» says the curator.
