Toyo Ito of Japan is the 2013 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate
Los Angeles, CA—Toyo Ito, a 71 year old architect whose architectural practice is based in Tokyo, Japan, will be the recipient of the 2013 Pritzker Architecture Prize. It was announced today by Thomas J. Pritzker, chairman of The Hyatt Foundation which sponsors the prize. Ito is the sixth Japanese architect to become a Pritzker Laureate — the first five being the late Kenzo Tange in 1987, Fumihiko Maki in 1993, Tadao Ando in 1995, and the team of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa in 2010.
The formal ceremony for what has come to be known throughout the world as architecture’s highest honor will be at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday, May 29. This marks the first time the ceremony has been held in Boston, and the location has particular significance because it was designed by another Pritzker Laureate, Ieoh Ming Pei who received the prize in 1983.

Toyō Itō en Wikipedia
Toyo Ito (伊東豊雄 ‘Itō Toyo’o’?) (Seúl, 1 de junio de 1941) es un arquitecto japonés. Es considerado «uno de los arquitectos más innovadores e influyentes del mundo» según la web Designboom.com.2
Nació en Seúl (Corea) durante el periodo de explotación colonial japonesa, se graduó de la Universidad Nacional de Tokio (Japón) en 1965. Trabajó durante 4 años en la oficia de Kiyonori Kikutake Arquitectos y Asociados, más tarde abre su propia oficina llamada «Urbot» (Urban Robot) en 1971, en Tokio. En 1979, el estudio cambia su nombre al de Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects. Con el cambio inicia un periodo de expansión y difusión internacional. En la actualidad alterna una vida con un fuerte contenido lúdico, dedica parte de su tiempo a la práctica del golf, y una carrera como arquitecto global.

Esperando conocer al Premio Pritzker 2013 (el domingo o antes) «Home | The Pritzker Architecture Prize»
El Portal del prestigioso Premio Pritzker de Arquitectura (popular, aunque injustamente, conocido como el «Nóbel de la Arquitectura«) ya está listo para efectuar el anuncio del nuevo ganador, previsto para este domingo 17 de marzo. Sin embargo y como en años anteriores, puede registrarse alguna filtración, que nos permitiría conocer al galardonado antes de la fecha oficialmente prevista.
Mi favorito: como en ediciones anteriores, sigo con la convicción que es el turno del Maestro Cesar Pelli – pocos arquitectos han logrado una obra de vida con proyectos tan icónicos sin haber sido destacados con este galardón.

At the end of the meeting of the Board, President Paolo Baratta stated:
“The Architecture Exhibitions of the Biennale have gradually grown in importance internationally. El arquitecto holandés Rem Koolhaas será el director de la Bienal de Arquitectura 2014 en Venecia, según ha informado la organización en su página web.
El presidente la Bienal, Paolo Baratta, dijo de Koolhaas que es «una de las personalidades más importantes de entre los arquitectos contemporáneos«.
Koolhaas tan sólo dijo sobre sus planes para esta importante exposición de arquitectura: «Queremos echar una nueva mirada a los elementos fundamentales de la arquitectura que cualquier arquitecto utiliza siempre en todas partes«.

Ranking Arquitectura Ebuzzing Labs, Octubre 2012: presenta estos Blogs como los más influyentes en español sobre la temática
Desde hace más de dos años, mes a mes, publico este Ranking Arquitectura, determinado por la organización Ebuzzing (antes «Wikio«) a través de algoritmo propio en su “Labs”. En esta oportunidad presento la ediciòn correspondiente al mes en curso, octubre 2012: a continuación encontrarán listado con los Blogs dedicados a la temática de Arquitectura que ellos destacan como los más influyentes en nuestro idioma común, el muy rico y noble español. En todo este tiempo, ArquitecturaS se ha mantenido (con sus altos y sus bajos) en el Top 100 de la categoría.

Obra del artista Yadegar Asisi: El muro se erige nuevamente en Berlín en una panorámica de 360 grados – Qué.es
El Muro de Berlín, que durante 28 años dividió la ciudad en dos, vuelve a erigirse en uno de sus emplazamientos originales, cerca del paso fronterizo de Checkpoint Charlie, aunque en forma de monumental panorámica de 360 grados, obra del artista Yadegar Asisi.

A partir de este domingo, el público podrá viajar en el tiempo hasta un día ficticio de otoño en los años 80 del siglo pasado y acompañar a las personas en su día a día.
Así, el espectador se convierte en testigo de una mudanza en el barrio occidental de Kreuzberg, observa a grafiteros estampando su obra en el muro y puede ver a los clientes de un bar o a unos borrachos salir del pub de la esquina.
Mientras en las fachadas grises de la parte oriental cuelgan pancartas con lemas de la extinta República Democrática Alemana (RDA), las del oeste están iluminadas por publicidad de Occidente.
Tampoco faltan los guardias fronterizos, que desde sus torres de control observan por encima de la franja de la muerte la vida en el lado occidental.
Esta panorámica, de 60 metros de largo y 15 metros de altura, sobre el muro erigido en 1961 y derribado en 1989, es la obra hasta el momento más personal del artista y ofrece una perspectiva del Berlín dividido desde la calle Sebastianstrasse de Kreuzberg sobre el distrito de Mitte, en el este.

IT has become fashionable in many architectural circles to declare the death of drawing. What has happened to our profession, and our art, to cause the supposed end of our most powerful means of conceptualizing and representing architecture?
The computer, of course. With its tremendous ability to organize and present data, the computer is transforming every aspect of how architects work, from sketching their first impressions of an idea to creating complex construction documents for contractors.
For centuries, the noun “digit” (from the Latin “digitus”) has been defined as “finger,” but now its adjectival form, “digital,” relates to data. Are our hands becoming obsolete as creative tools? Are they being replaced by machines? And where does that leave the architectural creative process?
Today architects typically use computer-aided design software with names like AutoCAD and Revit, a tool for “building information modeling.”
Buildings are no longer just designed visually and spatially; they are “computed” via interconnected databases.

Mi comentario: este artículo, y más aún, las ilustraciones que le acompañan, son una auténtica «delicatessen» para disfrutar el domingo.
Me siento totalmente identificado con los planteamientos del Profesor Graves porque precisamente, un enfoque similar, fue el que apliqué durante más de 10 años de carrera como investigador docente universitario: mi paradoja, en el área de diseño arquitectónico asistido por ordenador (CAAD)
A muchos de mis antiguos estudiantes les resultaba muy extraño que en las primeras clases de la asignatura DAAC no tocaran un ordenador, y el tiempo se dedicara a conversar y hacer bocetos en papel (que oportunamente aprendían a digitalizar) Luego, ya de lleno en el ordenador, se sorprendían con los resultados obtenidos al tener, de entrada, claras sus ideas.

For architects and interior designers, creating an impression that is as identical as possible to the final product is an essential element of their professions.
Most clients desire to see their buildings or interior spaces transformed into the ideal concept they had visualised. The architects are tasked with the unenviable responsibility of making this happen.
It is for this reason that the use of architectural animation and 3D modelling software in the design of buildings and interior spaces is fast gaining popularity.
Not so long ago, building plans used to be done and presented entirely on paper, consuming a lot of resources, time and labour.
However, an architectural job that could typically have taken up to three months in the past can now take two weeks.
Experts say that the increasing adoption of 3D imaging and architectural animation has resulted in more accurate representations, convenience and saves clients time and money in construction projects.
According to Waweru Njuguna, an architect and interior designer at Synergy Arc, an architectural firm in Nairobi, use of digital imaging in architecture boosts accuracy and speed in design.
“It’s now become much easier to show the client exactly what you want to build and the projected outcome using 3D models and animation,” says the architect. “In addition to this, changes and manipulation could easily be factored in as the project progresses eliminating the hassle of having to redo entire plans.”
Adds Njuguna: “If, for example, you are changing the flooring from wood to carpet, you can easily go back to your project design on the computer, make the changes and have the new layout reflect on the final design.”
This according to Njuguna, has made consultation between the design team and the clients easier and as such, proposals are developed much faster.

One of Frank Lloyd Wright‘s decidedly lesser-known works, a 1956 doghouse designed for a black Lab named Eddie, has been reconstructed complete with leaky roof.

In 1956, 12-year-old Jim Berger decided that it was high time that his loyal black Lab, Eddie, got a proper backyard doghouse. So, Berger took it upon himself to pen a letter to the same architect that designed his family’s home in Saint Anselmo, Calif. In his letter, Berger asked the architect if he would be so kind as to design the doghouse himself as so the two structures would not clash. He offered to pay for the design with money earned on his paper route.
Wrote Berger in his letter, dated June 19, 1956: “I would appreciate it if you would design me a doghouse, which would be easy to build, but would go with our house … (My dog) is two and a half feet high and three feet long. The reasons I would like this doghouse is for the winters mainly.” Berger also made sure to inform the architect of Eddie‘s age: Four (human years), 28 (dog years).
The architect responded to Berger’s query, explaining to him that he was too busy at the moment to take on such an «opportunity» but would consider it later in the year when his schedule was less hectic. «I may have something then,» he wrote. In November of that year, Berger followed up with a second letter and, lo and behold, the architect then sent him a set of drawings outlining the design of Eddie’s doghouse. The architect took on his young client’s project gratis.
Oh, and did I mention that the architect that Berger solicited to design Eddie’s backyard digs was some totally obscure guy in Wisconsin named Frank Lloyd Wright?
In 1956, 88-year-old Wright probably had a few important things on his mind (i.e. the construction of what’s arguably his most iconic creation, the Guggenheim Museum in New York) other than indulging the child of a former client in Marin Country, Calif. And Wright wasn’t exactly known for being a warm and fuzzy kind of guy prone to striking up correspondences with juvenile dog owners — Wright’s legacy of arrogance, recklessness, and personal turmoil is just as famous as the hundreds upon hundreds of buildings that he brought to life. Yet somehow, Berger got through to one of the 20th century’s greatest — and most difficult — geniuses.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The Fallingwater home in southwestern Pennsylvania. But a child’s doghouse?
Frank Lloyd Wright designed hundreds of landmark buildings and homes during a prolific career that spanned more than seven decades. But in what is widely considered a first and only for the famed architect, Wright indulged a young boy’s humble request for a dog house in 1956 and sent him designs for the structure.

A doghouse designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright became a cherished boyhood memory. Now the doghouse has been rebuilt and is featured in a documentary about Wright’s work called «Romanza.»
